Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, 

I’m writing to voice my strong opposition to the slaughter of horses in Canada for human consumption overseas, and the horrific practice of our Canadian government allowing the export of live horses for slaughter in Japan and South Korea.

Horses are not raised as food animals and have absolutely no traceability. The EID document is open to fraudulent and dishonest activity. Drugs in horse meat are a risk to human health, as well as Canada’s reputation as a food producer.

The breeding and export of live horses, solely to be flown across the world to supply the elite in Asia with raw horse meat, is especially appalling.

The stress of air transport for these horses is extremely inhumane, not to mention the vast resources used and CO2 emissions.  

In 2014, the Liberal Party voted unanimously to support Bill C-571, a bill that would have required horses to be regulated like all other food animals. Yet now, Federally Approved Slaughter Plants are operating in Canada without any traceability.

It’s impossible to slaughter horses humanely, and horse slaughter enables indiscriminate breeding, irresponsibility and unnecessary suffering.

Horse slaughter causes serious welfare concerns and is NOT a solution for neglect or starvation.

Horses built this country. Millions of horses gave their lives for us in war. The least they deserve is humane treatment and our respect.

A 2019 poll showed almost 70% of Canadians do not support horse slaughter.

Recreational horse owners contribute billions to the economy, and do not support horse slaughter.

Why is the government protecting a foreign-owned company over its own Citizens?

Why has the Liberal Government done an about-face on their promise to support stronger legislation for horse slaughter?

Please listen to the wishes of Canadian Citizens and support an immediate ban on the slaughter of horses in Canada, and STOP their export to other countries for slaughter.

The goal of this campaign was to create the awareness needed to end horse slaughter in Canada, through magazine and billboard ads. 

Unfortunately, to date all publications and billboard companies contacted have outright refused to accept a paid ad, claiming the subject is “too controversial.” 

This is an example of how far the tentacles of the agriculture industry extend into businesses to censor information available to the public. The fear is that banning horse slaughter would be “the thin edge of the wedge,” and result in further restrictions on the many cruel practices that are standard in the food industry. 

Horse publications also generate most of their advertising dollars from breeders and horse sports that profit from slaughter. Publishing any anti-slaughter advertising would risk upsetting their main customers.
